What is a Nikkah?

Nikkah (pronounced ni-kaah) is the Islamic marriage ceremony - a sacred covenant/contract between two people who are choosing to build a life together.

In Islam, marriage is considered one of the most meaningful acts of faith. It is not just a legal arrangement or a social celebration; it is a spiritual contract witnessed by God, family, and community. The Nikkah is the moment when that covenant is formally established through an offer, an acceptance, and the witnessing of loved ones.

The ceremony itself is often beautifully simple. What makes it profound is the intention behind it: a commitment to love, kindness, companionship, and lifelong partnership - rooted in prophetic traditions.

In the Words of the Qur'an

The Qur'an speaks of marriage not only as a contract of obligation, but as a source of peace, affection, and mercy. A few verses from the Qur'an

"And among His signs is this: that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may find tranquility in them, and He has placed between you affection and mercy."

Qur'an 30:21 — Surah Ar-Rum

"They are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them."

Qur'an 2:187 - Surah Al-Baqarah

"It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he might dwell in security with her."

Quran 7:189 - Surah Al-A'raf
