Each Nikkah has its own character shaped by culture and family, but most share the same essential elements. Here is what you can expect:
1. The Khutbah خُطْبَة
A short sermon recited by the officiant. It typically includes praise of God, verses from the Qur'an, and reflections on the meaning of marriage.
2. The Mahr مَهْر
A gift/ dowry - Offered from the groom to the bride. It is hers alone to keep, a gesture of commitment, security and respect.
3. The Ijab & Qubul إِيجَاب و قُبُول
The offer and the acceptance. The heart of the ceremony: each person, of their own free will, consents to the marriage before witnesses.
4. The Witnesses
Two witnesses observe the agreement, and the contract is signed - a reminder that marriage in Islam is both a spiritual bond and a clear, honored agreement between equals.
5. The Du'a دُعَاء
A closing prayer asking God to bless the couple with love, patience, and a life filled with mercy.
